Combinatorial Stokes formulas via minimal resolutions

چکیده
We describe an explicit chain map from the standard resolution to the minimal resolution for the finite cyclic group Zk of order k. We then demonstrate how such a chain map induces a “Zk-combinatorial Stokes theorem”, which in turn implies “Dold’s theorem” that there is no equivariant map from an n-connected to an n-dimensional free Zk-complex. Thus we build a combinatorial access road to problems in combinatorics and discrete geometry that have previously been treated with methods from equivariant topology. The special case k = 2 for this is classical; it involves Tucker’s (1949) combinatorial lemma which implies the Borsuk–Ulam theorem, its proof via chain complexes by Lefschetz (1949), the combinatorial Stokes formula of Fan (1967), and Meunier’s work (2006).

An Introduction to Knot Floer Homology
This is a survey article about knot Floer homology. We present three constructions of this invariant: the original one using holomorphic disks, a combinatorial description using grid diagrams, and a combinatorial description in terms of the cube of resolutions. We discuss the geometric information carried by knot Floer homology, and the connection to threeand four-dimensional topology via surge...
متن کاملMonomial Ideals, Edge Ideals of Hypergraphs, and Their Minimal Graded Free Resolutions
We use the correspondence between hypergraphs and their associated edge ideals to study the minimal graded free resolution of squarefree monomial ideals. The theme of this paper is to understand how the combinatorial structure of a hypergraph H appears within the resolution of its edge ideal I(H). We discuss when recursive formulas to compute the graded Betti numbers of I(H) in terms of its sub...
متن کاملCombinatorial Minimal Free Resolutions of Ideals with Monomial and Binomial Generators
In recent years, the combinatorial properties of monomials ideals [7, 10, 14] and binomial ideals [9, 10] have been widely studied. In particular, combinatorial interpretations of minimal free resolutions have been given in both cases. In this present work, we will generalize existing techniques to obtain two new results. The first is S[Λ]-resolutions of Λ-invariant submodules of k[Z] where Λ i...
متن کاملCohen–macaulay Quotients of Normal Semigroup Rings via Irreducible Resolutions
For a radical monomial ideal I in a normal semigroup ring k[Q], there is a unique minimal irreducible resolution 0 → k[Q]/I → W 0 → W 1 → · · · by modules W i of the form ⊕ j k[Fij ], where the Fij are (not necessarily distinct) faces of Q. That is, W i is a direct sum of quotients of k[Q] by prime ideals. This paper characterizes Cohen–Macaulay quotients k[Q]/I as those whose minimal irreducib...
متن کاملSplittable Ideals and the Resolutions of Monomial Ideals
We provide a new combinatorial approach to study the minimal free resolutions of edge ideals, that is, quadratic square-free monomial ideals. With this method we can recover most of the known results on resolutions of edge ideals with fuller generality, and at the same time, obtain new results. Past investigations on the resolutions of edge ideals usually reduced the problem to computing the di...
